Device Count Exceeded Notification in Jamf Pro

Updated this week

Description

The 'Device Count Exceeded' message is a notification indicating that the number of managed devices exceeds your licensed count or that the activation code has not been properly updated. While it does not disrupt immediate device management, ensuring licensing compliance is crucial for long-term functionality.

This article provides steps for clearing out the "Device Count Exceeded" notification.

1. Verify and Validate the Activation Code

Ensure the activation code in Jamf Pro matches the most recent activation code in Jamf Account under Solutions > view Details for Jamf Pro > Licenses.

If it is not the most recent, update it following the steps on Update the Activation Code in Jamf Pro.

2. Confirm Enrolled Devices and Device Types

Generate a Jamf Pro summary (Settings > Information > Jamf Pro summary > Select All > Create) and compare the number and device types enrolled to your current subscription.

The Device Count Exceeded notification is expected if you have enrolled more devices you have licenses for or if you have a device type enrolled that doesn't match your subscription. For example, if you only have licenses for iOS, but have tvOS devices enrolled this would trigger the notification.

Contact your Account team at Jamf to purchase additional licenses.

3. Clearing Unused Devices

If there are devices being managed that are no longer needed, you can remove them from management. We can use a smart group to identify devices that have not checked in or inventoried in over 30 days, which gives a good idea that they are not in use. Ensure that the devices that fall under these Smart Groups actually need to be deleted and/or are not just off or not checking in for other reasons.

  1. For the smart group use the following settings:

    • criteria: "Last Check In" for computers and "Last Inventory Update" for iOS devices

    • operator: more than x days ago

    • value: 30

  2. After saving the group, click View in the bottom right corner to see the list of devices and review if they should still be managed and have inventory records in Jamf Pro.
