Troubleshooting Self Service+ Slowness on iOS Devices

Description

There are several factors that can contribute to slowness or content loading issues in Self Service+ on iOS. This article covers the most common causes and their resolutions to help you quickly identify and address performance problems.

Cause 1: Notifications Permission Denied

When a user taps Don't Allow on the notifications prompt the first time they open Self Service+, the app may fail to load content properly. Symptoms include:

  • An "Error loading content" message

  • Very slow or incomplete content loading

Troubleshooting Steps

Navigate to the notification settings for Self Service+ and enable notifications:

  • iOS 18: Settings > Apps > Self Service > Allow Notifications

  • iOS 17: Settings > Self Service > Allow Notifications

Cause 2: Too Many Apps Scoped to Self Service+

Scoping a large number of apps (500+) to Self Service+ is a known performance limitation. When too many apps are made available, users may experience:

  • Slow loading and scrolling

  • App icons taking a long time to appear

  • Search returning no results, incomplete results, or incorrect results

  • Keyboard lag

Troubleshooting Steps

Reduce the number of apps available in Self Service+ by tightening scope:

  1. In Jamf Pro, review the apps currently scoped to Self Service+.

  2. Use Smart Groups to target only relevant apps to the appropriate users and devices, rather than scoping broadly to all devices.

  3. Aim to keep the number of apps available to any given device well below the 500+ threshold.

Cause 3: Outdated Self Service+ Version

Older versions of Self Service+ for iOS have had known performance bugs that have since been resolved in newer releases. Running an outdated version is a common baseline issue.

Troubleshooting Steps

Ensure all devices are running the latest version of Self Service+ available from the App Store. You can verify the installed version via device inventory in Jamf Pro under Devices > Mobile Device Apps.
