Unmanage an Individual Mobile Device from Jamf Pro

Issue Description

Troubleshooting Steps

If the device is in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager, unassign or release it. Note: If you release the device, in order to manage the device again in the future you will need to re-add the device using Apple Configurator 2.

  1. If the device is in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager, unassign or release it. Note: If you release the device, in order to manage the device again in the future you will need to re-add the device using Apple Configurator 2.

  2. Depending on your needs, either a) unmanage the device or b) erase the device. Note: An erase is required to remove the Supervision status.

    1. Unmanage the device:

      1. In Jamf Pro navigate to Devices > Search Inventory > (select the device) > Management tab

      2. Select 'Unmanage device' from the Management Commands section.

    2. Erase the device from Jamf Pro:

      1. If the user needs to retain/backup user/application data using iCloud and their personal Apple ID, take a backup before sending the wipe device command. Keep in mind Restoring an iCloud Backup to an iOS device during Automated Device Enrollment

      2. In Jamf Pro navigate to Devices > Search Inventory > (select the device) > Management tab

      3. Select 'Wipe Device' from the Management Commands section. This will remove the MDM Profile and it will erase all data from the iPad.

  3. Decide if you want to keep the device record in Jamf Pro or remove it.Keep: If you wish to keep these now unmanaged devices for inventory reasons; they can remain in Jamf Pro without taking up a license.
    Delete: Click the delete button in the lower-right corner of the device inventory record (it shows on all 3 tabs).
