Manage an Unmanaged App with Jamf Pro

Description

This article discusses managing an unmanaged iOS or iPadOS application using Jamf Pro.

Managing an Unmanaged Device

  1. Obtain the Apple Business or Apple School Manager volume content licenses for the application we want to unmanage.

    1. Sign into Apple Business or Apple School Manager with a user that has access to manage content.

    2. For Apple Business, select Apps & Services at the top of the page. If using Apple School Manager, click App Store in the left column.

    3. Search for the app you need to get licenses for.

    4. Click on the app.

    5. Click Add and select your location from the drop down list.

    6. Select Review.

    7. Select Add to Library.

Note - previously you indicated the quantity of licenses needed when obtaining apps from Apple School Manager or Apple Business. This is no longer necessary for unpaid apps; following the workflow above you get 2+ billion licenses automatically.

  2. Within Jamf Pro, go to Devices > Mobile Device Apps and select the app in question.

Note if it is not showing immediately after completing step 1, wait 5-10 minutes for the licenses to sync or manually add the app in Jamf Pro.

  3. Click Edit and check the box for Make app managed when possible.

  4. Check the box for Convert unmanaged app to managed.

  5. Click the Managed Distribution tab and check the box for Assign content in volume.

  6. Click Scope and add desired devices or device groups.

  7. Click Save.
