App Version vs App Short Version in Jamf Pro Searches

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Description

What is the difference between App version in Jamf Pro and App Short Version?

Choosing Criteria for Your Smart Device Group

When choosing criteria for a Smart Device Group or Advanced Search, there are two options for the version of an app:

  • App Short Version: is the publicly visible version of an app.

    • This is what is shown in the App Record in Jamf and in the Apple App Store (if it is not an in-house app).

    • This is often the criteria that we will want to utilize in our smart groups as it is the commonly known version.

  • App Version: refers to the build version of an app, which is useful for developers and administrators to track specific changes and bug fixes across different releases of the application.

    • Typically the App Version differs from the App Short Version and refers to a specific build number within the App Short Version.

For example, the App Short Version for an app like Microsoft Teams might be 6.11.2 whereas the App Version (or build version) is 100772024112802. We can see both the App Version and Short App Version for installed apps in the device record in Jamf Pro under Inventory > Apps. If we wanted to find any devices without the latest version, we could use the criteria "App Name has Microsoft Teams AND App Short Version is not 6.11.2".
