Provisional Enrollment Failed Error - for Apple Configurator

"Provisional Enrollment Failed" Error message

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Issue Description

"Provisional Enrollment Failed" Error message during preparation in Apple Configurator to add device to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

This error typically means that either the device is already in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager or there was an issue with the network connection during preparation.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check to ensure the device isn't showing in the Apple Configurator MDM Server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager. If it is there proceed with enrollment steps: assign the device to the Jamf MDM Server, assign the device to a PreStage Enrollment, go through the Setup Assistant on the device to enroll.

  2. If the device doesn't show in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, prepare the device again using one of the network connection options below:

    1. Connect to a network on the device: The device should be on the Hello screen of the Setup Assistant, proceed through the Setup Assistant to connect to a network but go no further.

    2. Apple Configurator 2 WiFi network profile:

      1. In Apple Configurator, go to: File > New Profile > Wi-Fi

      2. Enter SSID (Network name)

      3. Select security type (Typically WPA/WPA2 Personal)

      4. Enter password

      5. File > Save

  3. Do not unplug the device until the preparation finishes. If you get the same error message again, prepare an additional time using the other network connection type from step 2.
