Provisional Enrollment Failed Error Message when preparing devices with Apple Configurator

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Issue Description

We can use Apple Configurator to add devices to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager and then Auto-Enroll in Jamf Now. During the Apple Configurator process you may see an error message saying "Provisional Enrollment Failed."

This error typically means that either the device is already in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager or there was an issue with the network connection during preparation.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager click Devices and search the device's serial number to confirm it's not already showing there.

    • If it is in your Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager account, proceed with enrollment steps:

      1. Assign the device to the Jamf Now MDM Server if it is not already.

      2. Ensure it shows in Jamf Now under Auto-Enrollment > View Devices. If not, click Sync Devices in the upper right corner.

      3. Go through the Setup Assistant on the device to enroll.

  2. If the device doesn't show in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, go through the preparation process again using one of the network connection options below:

    • Connect to a network on the device: The device should be on the Hello screen of the Setup Assistant, proceed through the Setup Assistant to connect to a network but go no further.

    • Use an Apple Configurator 2 WiFi network profile:

      1. In Apple Configurator go to: File > New Profile > Wi-Fi

      2. Enter SSID (Network name).

      3. Select security type (Typically WPA/WPA2 Personal).

      4. Enter password.

      5. Go to File > Save.

  3. Do not unplug the device until the preparation finishes. If you get the same error message again, prepare an additional time using the other network connection type from step 2.
