Enrolling a Mobile Device Using Apple Configurator

Devices can be enrolled in Jamf School using Apple Configurator 2. This method allows you to simultaneously supervise and enroll up to 30 devices at once (depending on USB adapter capabilities) without devices being in Apple School Manager or using Automated Device Enrollment.

This method replaces the workflow of only supervising the device in Apple Configurator and then enrolling manually via on-device enrollment.

When enrolled with this method, the MDM profile on the device is removable. This method is not suitable for devices with users who can’t be trusted not to tamper with the MDM profile.

Enrollment Steps in Apple Configurator 2

  1. Connect the iPad to the Mac and open Apple Configurator. If prompted on the iPad, trust the connection to the computer.

  2. Erase your device with one of the following methods:

    • Highlight the iPad in Apple Configurator and from the menu bar select Actions > Advanced > Erase All Content and Settings.

    • If enrolled in MDM you can send an “Erase Device” command from the MDM console.

    • You can erase the device locally (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Contents and Settings) if not restricted.

    • You can use the Actions > Restore option in Apple Configurator to wipe the device and reinstall the operating system.

  3. Once the erase process completes and the device reappears in Apple Configurator, highlight the device and select Actions > Prepare… from the menu bar.

  4. In the preparation windows make the following adjustments:

    1. The “Prepare with” option should be set to Manual Configuration.

    2. Disable the option for Add to Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager if checked.

    3. Enable the option to Supervise devices if not enabled.

    4. It is recommended to enable the option for Allow devices to pair with other computers to allow for future troubleshooting if needed.

    5. Click the Next button.

  5. Select the MDM server previously configured in Apple Configurator with your Jamf School enrollment URL and click Next.

  6. Select the Organization previously created in Apple Configurator from your Jamf School Supervision Identity and click Next.

  7. Configure which steps in the setup assistant you would like to show or hide, then click the Prepare button.

    • It is recommended to show the “Location Services” step during setup assistant as this can not be enabled remotely after enrollment.

  8. Once the preparation process is complete, proceed through Setup Assistant on the iPad to finish the enrollment of the device into Jamf School.
