Troubleshooting Disown Devices in Jamf School

Description

When you no longer want to manage a device from Apple School Manager via MDM, you can release the device.

You can release the device directly in Apple School manager following the steps in the Apple School Manager User Guide or you can send a disown device command from Jamf School.

If using the command in Jamf School and there is an issue, you might see the error "Something went wrong while disowning the selected device(s). Please try again later or contact your provider." This article provides steps for troubleshooting this error.

Troubleshooting Steps

There are various of reasons on why this could have occurred, but the most common reasons are explained below:

  1. The Automated Device Enrollment token is not syncing.

    1. Verify the Automated Device Enrollment token is syncing in Jamf School under Organization > Settings > Automated Device Enrollment.

    2. If there is a syncing error or it's expired, renew the token.

  2. The device has already been released in Apple School Manager.

    1. To verify this login to Apple School Manager, select Devices, and search for the device's serial number. There will be a status indicating if it's been released or unassigned.

  3. Your device is inactive/not checking in, so it can't receive the command.

    1. If this is the issue, then review the Inactive Device troubleshooting guide to regain communication: Inactive Device Status.

If the end goal is just to release the device, there's no need to go through the trouble of regaining device communication. It may be more simple to just go to Apple School Manager and release the device.
