Enrolling Devices in Elevate

This article documents the computer and mobile device enrollment steps for organizations using Elevate. It covers both Automated Device Enrollment and profile-driven enrollment (user-initiated enrollment via URL).

Description

Enrollment methods available with Elevate are discussed in the Elevate Documentation. There are some important management differences to keep in mind when choose enrollment types:

  • You can set if the MDM profile is removable or not

  • Computer will be supervised.

  • You can set if the MDM profile is removable or not

  • Mobile device will be supervised

Profile-driven Device Enrollment
(user-initiated enrollment via URL)

  • MDM profile will always be removable.

  • Computer will be supervised.

  • MDM profile will always be removable

  • Mobile device will be unsupervised (unless manually supervised with Apple Configurator)


Automated Device Enrollment Overview

Automated Device Enrollment is the preferred enrollment experience for organizations with devices that meet the requirements below:

  • An Apple Business Manager account exist for your organization

  • An MDM Server is created in Apple Business Manager for you Elevate and the server token is uploaded to Elevate

  • Devices are in Apple Business Manager and are assigned to the Elevate MDM Server

    • Devices purchased directly from Apple or an authorized reseller can be added to your Apple Business Manager account automatically. Apple Configurator can be used to add devices to Apple Business Manager if needed (requires wiping the device).

  • Devices are able to complete enrollment steps

    • Mobile Devices: enroll via Setup Assistant

    • Computers: enroll via Setup Assistant or via Terminal command

Enrolling Computers and Mobile Devices in the Setup Assistant with Automated Device Enrollment

New or factory reset devices assigned to the Elevate MDM server in Apple Business Manager will enroll automatically when they are turned on and go through Setup Assistant.

  1. Turn on the device.

  2. Progress through the Setup Assistant, if prompted ensure to setup as a new device and do not transfer information or setup with another device.

  3. Connect to a network when prompted in Setup Assistant.

  4. On the Remote Management screen, click the button to enroll the device.

  5. Finish setting up the device.

  6. Once enrolled, the device will show in Elevate under Devices > All Devices.


Enrolling Setup Computers with Automated Device Enrollment

Computers that are assigned to the MDM server in Apple Business Manager can be enrolled using Terminal following the steps below.

  1. Open the Terminal.app.

  2. Type the command sudo profiles renew -type enrollment.

  3. Enter the administrator password for the local account.

  4. The Remote Management screen will appear. Click Enroll.

  5. Once complete you can click Quit to return to the Desktop.

  6. The device will show in Elevate under Devices > All Devices.

For computers on macOS 15 or earlier, the end user experience may differ from the steps above. Look for a notification in the upper-right corner and follow the prompts to install the profile.

Enrolling Setup Mobile Devices with Automated Device Enrollment

iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs enroll in Automated Device Enrollment in the Setup Assistant. If the device is already setup, it is necessary to erase the device to go through the Setup Assistant again to enroll.

  1. Follow the steps below for your device to erase the device.

  2. Follow the steps above to enroll your device in Setup Assistant.


Profile-driven Device Enrollment Overview

If you do not have devices in Apple Business Manager and cannot add them using Apple Configurator, then profile-driven device enrollment, also known as user-initiated enrollment is a good option to enroll institutionally owned devices.

The steps to enable and enroll devices with profile-driven device enrollment are listed below:

  1. Create an enrollment account password in Elevate under Enrollment.

  2. Initiate the enrollment process on the device:

    1. Navigate to the enrollment URL provided in Elevate under Enrollment > User-initiated Enrollment or use the QR Code.

    2. Enter in the enrollment username and password and click Log in.

    3. On the 'Assign to user' screen, leave the box blank and click Enroll.

    4. For the prompt to 'Install the MDM profile,' click Continue.

  3. To complete enrollment, install the MDM profile in Settings for mobile devices and System Settings for computers. The exact installation steps might differ depending on the OS version installed.
