Setting OS Update Deferrals using Jamf Pro Blueprints

Updated over 3 months ago

Description

Apple allows for deferring macOS updates for up to 90 days. If your environment meets the requirements, Jamf Pro blueprints are the preferred option for OS deferrals. Deferrals set via blueprint override any update deferral setting in the Restrictions payload.

Requirements

  • Enable OIDC-based SSO through Jamf Account in Jamf Pro

  • Device requirements:

    • tvOS 18.4 or later, supervised

    • iOS 18 or later, supervised

    • iPadOS 18 or later, supervised

    • macOS 15 or later

Creating a Jamf Pro blueprint for OS Deferrals

  1. In Jamf Pro go to Blueprints in the left sidebar.

  2. Either open an existing blueprint or click + Create blueprint in the top-right corner.

  3. For new blueprints, provide a name and description and click Create.

  4. Select Software Update Settings from the list of Blueprint options.

  5. Click Configure for Deferrals.

  6. Check the boxes to enable the desired settings and enter the number of days (between 1 and 90) you want the deferral in place for.

Note: Jamf recommends Jamf Pro administrators always set the major and minor versions to the same integer value eg. 14 and 14, 30 and 30, etc. This is due to the potential for a rollback from a patched macOS version to a non-patched version due to deferral logic.

  7. Click Update.

  8. Configure any other desired Software Update Settings and click Add.

  9. Configure any other blueprint settings as desired.

  10. Click Scope and check the boxes for desired device groups. Jamf recommends testing first.

  11. Click Deploy.
