Updating Devices with Jamf School & Blueprints

In this article we are going to cover the basic process for updating your Jamf School devices using a Jamf School blueprint.

Description

Jamf School blueprints use Apple's declarative device management functionality to enforce OS updates on managed devices. This article provides steps for creating and deploying a blueprint in Jamf School with the minimum required keys for updating devices to a specific OS version.

Requirements

To use software updates via blueprints your devices need to meet these minimum OS version requirements:

  • macOS: 14.0+

  • iPadOS/iOS: 17.0+

  • tvOS: 18.4+

Creating the Blueprint

Follow the steps below to create a blueprint with the minimum keys required for enforcing an update. This article uses the Specific OS version and time for the Enforcement Type, which is ideal for environments with devices that are multiple OS versions behind.

  1. In Jamf School, select Blueprints in the left sidebar.

  2. Click + Create Blueprint in the upper-right corner.

  3. Click where it says Untitled Blueprint and give the blueprint a descriptive name, for example: macOS - OS Update - 26.5

This name clearly signals that this blueprint is intended for macOS devices and aims to update the OS to a specific version.

  4. Search for Software Updates in the Component Library and click on the component to begin the configuration.

The Software Update Settings component configures settings for software updates but will not trigger an OS update.

  5. Select Specific OS version and time for the Enforcement Type.

  6. Use the Date and time of the update field to configure a deadline for updates.

  7. Enter the OS version you want devices to update to in the Target OS version field, such as 26.5.

  8. Click Add in the lower-right corner to add the configured component to the blueprint.

Deploying the Blueprint

  1. Click on the Scope box and select the desired groups from the list to receive the blueprint.

⚠️ Keep in mind that it is expected behavior for devices to start downloading updates immediately upon receiving the blueprint. If many devices need to be updated, consider breaking up the deployment into smaller groups to avoid large impacts to your network.

  2. Click Save in the lower-right corner to add them to the deployment.

  3. Click Deploy in the upper-right corner to start sending the blueprint out to the devices in scope. Devices will download the update after they check in with Jamf School and the blueprint installs.
