Description
Managing app installations on macOS devices is essential for maintaining security and compliance. This guide explains how to prevent users from installing apps, whether from the internet or the App Store, using standard user privileges and Jamf School restrictions.
Preventing App Installation on macOS
Ensure Users Have Standard Privileges:
Verify that macOS users are assigned Standard privileges instead of Administrator privileges.
Standard privileges prevent users from installing apps downloaded from the internet but still allow app installations from the App Store using a personal Apple Account.
Block the App Store (Optional):
To prevent app installations from the App Store, configure restrictions in Jamf School:
Navigate to Profiles > Overview.
Edit an existing macOS profile or create a new one.
Go to Restrictions > Apps.
Enable the Restrict App Store option.
Save the profile and scope it to the desired devices.
