Restoring iCloud Backup During Automated Device Enrollment (ADE)

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Issue Description

Admins may need to restore an iCloud backup to an iOS device during Automated Device Enrollment (ADE). However, Quick Start is not supported for devices enrolled through Apple School Manager (ASM) or Apple Business Manager (ABM).

Quick Start is not supported for devices enrolled through Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager. When these devices are set up via ADE, they cannot use Quick Start to transfer data from another device.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Use iCloud Backup Restore Instead of Quick Start

If the Automated Device Enrollment profile does not skip the "Restore" section, users will be prompted with the "Transfer Your Apps & Data" window during setup.

This window provides options to restore data from:

  • iCloud Backup

  • Mac or PC

Selecting the iCloud backup option allows users to restore their data seamlessly during enrollment.

2. Restoring After Enrollment

If the restore step is skipped during setup, you can still restore the device later:

  • Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to start the setup process again.

  • Choose to restore from iCloud backup when prompted.

Restoring to the Same Device vs. Restoring to a Separate Device

  • Restoring to the Same Device / Management State:

    • If the device being restored is the same device that created the iCloud backup and remains under the same management state, the restore process will retain all settings, apps, and data as expected.

  • Restoring to a Separate Device:

    • If restoring to a different device, even if it’s managed by the same organization, some settings may not transfer over due to differences in device management profiles and enrollment states.

    • Ensure the Automated Device Enrollment profile does not skip the restore option for the process to work properly.
