iPhone/iPad is missing Remote Management screen in Setup Assistant

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Description

A mobile device continues to skip the Remote Management screen during device setup. How can I ensure the device triggers auto-enrollment successfully?

Devices assigned to an MDM server in Apple Business Manager receive enrollment instructions when they connect to the internet for the first time during the Setup Assistant. This usually prompts the device to auto-enroll into Jamf Now. If the device fails to trigger auto-enrollment via the Remote Management screen, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Steps

Confirming the device meets the auto-enrollment requirements

  1. Click the Sync Devices button under Auto-Enrollment > View Devices and ensure the Devices last synced timestamp is current. This ensures the Auto-enrollment connection with Apple Business Manager is valid and working.

  2. Confirm the Serial Number of the device appears in Jamf Now under Auto-Enrollment > View Devices.

    1. For assistance finding the device's serial number see https://support.apple.com/en-us/102858.

  3. If restoring from a backup (iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices), ensure the backup is not sourced from the device you are trying to enroll. Remote Management will only trigger when restoring from a backup sourced from a different device.

Attempting Enrollment Again

If this is the first setup attempt, try restoring the device back to factory settings and reattempt the completion of the Setup Assistant. This will allow for the device to initiate a new activation attempt with Apple to hopefully receive enrollment instructions to enroll into Jamf Now. If the device has already missed multiple Remote Management attempts, proceed with the recommendations below.

  1. Try erasing the device and connecting to a different WiFi network (ideally a cellular hotspot) during the next Setup Assistant.

    • This will help rule out whether the previously used network is restricting the devices ability to activate with Apple to receive enrollment instructions. Reference the Device Management and Device Activation section of the article below on what network settings to whitelist. Use Apple Products on Enterprise Networks.

  2. Unassign and reassign the device to the MDM server in Apple Business Manager to reassign the Auto-enrollment profile to the device.

    1. Navigate to the Devices tab, click on the device in question, click on three dots > Edit MDM Server.

    2. Select Unassign from the current MDM. Click Continue.

    3. Log into Jamf Now.

    4. Navigate to Auto-Enrollment > View Devices and click Sync Devices.

    5. Confirm you do not see the device appear under the View Devices tab.

    6. In Apple Business Manager, navigate to the Devices tab, click on the device in question, click on three dots > Edit MDM Server.

    7. Select Assign to the following MDM and choose the Jamf Now MDM server. Click Continue.

    8. In Jamf Now under Auto-Enrollment > View Devices, click Sync Devices.

    9. Confirm you see the device appear on the View Devices list as "Ready for Enrollment".

    10. Erase the device and retry the Setup Assistant with the hope the device successfully triggers Remote Management.
