How to Rebuild an Accidentally-Deleted Smart Group

Issue Description

Remake a Smart Group that was deleted from the Jamf Pro Server exactly as it was before without knowing the criteria or restoring a database backup.

Troubleshooting Steps

We have two options for where we can get the information needed to do this:

  1. If the customer has Change Management Enabled and knows when the Group was deleted (and the logs have not yet rolled over), we can find the criteria by clicking on 'details' for the deletion. Change management is located in Settings>System Settings>Change Management Logs.

  2. If the admin does not have that enabled, or the logs have rolled over already, we can also find this information within an old summary on the account. Command+F search the file for either your "Smart Mobile Device Groups" or "Smart Computer Groups"

    Then we can scroll through the list to find our Group. It will be listed with the criteria that it had at the time of the Summary being generated. Often server summaries go much further back than our Change Management Logs, so this is a good fall back option if that is not available.
