'This Apple ID/Account cannot be used to make purchases' prompt on device enrolled in Jamf Now

Updated over 2 months ago

Description

For apps to deploy to devices using MDM, there must be:

  • a personal Apple Account logged into the device or

  • sufficient licenses for the app in Jamf Now.

Managed Apple Accounts can see apps in the App Store, but not get/purchase apps. In cases where a Managed Apple Account is on the device and there are no available Volume Purchasing licenses, we will see 'This Apple ID cannot be used to make purchases' or 'This Apple Account cannot. be used to make purchases'

Deploying Apps to Devices with Managed Apple Accounts

In order to deploy apps to the device, we will either need to:

  • sign into the device with a personal Apple Account or

  • deploy apps using volume purchasing licenses.

The steps for deploying apps with volume purchasing are listed below:

  1. Get licenses from Apple Business Manager.

    1. Log into Apple Business Manager with a user who has content privileges.

    2. Click Apps and Books in the left side column.

    3. Search for the desired app.

    4. Select the app in the middle panel.

    5. Click the dropdown box to choose the Jamf Now volume purchasing location.

    6. Type the number of licenses you want.

    7. Click Get.

  2. In Jamf Now go to Apps.

  3. Click the ... button in the upper-right corner and then click Sync Volume Purchased Apps.

  4. Once the app licenses are showing in Jamf Now, add the app to to the desired blueprint or add it to a device individually.
