Updated over 2 months ago

Description

Device-based volume purchasing distribution assigns the volume purchasing license to a device (instead of an Apple Account). This article covers deploying applications with device-based assignments.

Requirements:

  • App licenses from Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.

  • App is compatible with enrolled devices in scope.

Device Based Volume Purchasing Deployment

Follow the steps below to volume purchasing licenses from Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager and deploy them to devices with Jamf School.

  1. Buy/Get licenses for the app in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.

    1. Sign into Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager with a user that has access to Apps and Books.

    2. Click Apps and Books in the left column.

    3. Search for the app you need to get licenses for.

    4. Click on the app.

    5. Choose the volume purchasing location for your token in Jamf School in the dropdown menu.

    6. Write the number of licenses you need to get.

    7. Click Get/Purchase.

  2. In Jamf School sync with Apple School Manager to pull in the licenses. This can be done under Apps > Inventory by selecting Sync with Apple School Manager.

  3. On the Apps > Inventory screen and click on the app we want to deploy to open the app record.

  4. Click the + button and the drop down box that appears to add desired device groups to receive the app.

  5. (Optional) We can see the installation type and license assignment types for each device group in scope. The Settings button in the upper-left corner can be used to change installation types.

  6. Click Save in the lower right hand corner.
