Invalid Profile error when auto-enrolling devices into Jamf Now after using Apple Configurator

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Issue Description

Often times we see the 'Invalid Profile' message during Auto-Enrollment after a device was recently added to Apple Business Manager with Apple Configurator.

This photo shows an example of the error that you may be experiencing on your devices.

The most common reason for the "Invalid Profile" error is usually a timing issue between when devices are added to Apple Business Manager and assigned to the Jamf Now MDM server and when they connect to a network/begin activation.

If the device is still assigned to the Devices Added By Configurator 2 MDM server at the time of activation, Apple instructs the device to enroll into the Devices Added by Configurator 2 MDM server which will always result in the Invalid Profile error.

The device needs to be assigned to the Jamf Now server in Apple Business Manager, and show in Jamf Now under Auto-Enrollment > Show Devices prior to connecting to a network in the Setup assistant.

Verify MDM Server Assignment in Apple Business Manager

  1. Log into Apple Business Manager and click Devices.

  2. Click the Search window and enter the Serial Number of the device to locate it.

  3. If the device is assigned to the 'Devices Added by Configurator 2' MDM server, we need to assign it to the Jamf Now MDM Server.

    1. Select the device and click the Edit MDM Server button.

    2. Select the Jamf Now MDM server from the drop down menu and click Continue. If prompted to confirm, click Continue again.

Verify the Devices Shows as Eligible for Auto-Enrollment in Jamf Now

  1. In Jamf Now, go to Auto-enrollment > View Devices.

  2. Click the Sync Devices to ensure the sync occurs without error.

    • If the There was a problem syncing your devices from Apple error is displayed, renew the Auto-enrollment token connected to Jamf Now to re-establish the auto-enrollment connection with Apple Business Manager.

  3. Confirm that the Serial Number of the device in question is displayed on this tab and shows the Ready for Enrollment status.

Attempting Auto-Enrollment Again

  1. Connect the device back to the Mac and select Restore in Apple Configurator.

  2. Wait for the device to finish the restore process. The device is erased once the Hello screen appears.

  3. Complete the Setup Assistant on the device. The Remote Management screen should process without issue.
