What is the differences between device-based and Apple Account-based distribution of Volume Purchased apps?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Description

Jamf Now offers two options for volume purchasing app license assignment, device-based and Apple Account-based (user-based).

Image shows More Settings > Apps in Jamf Now showing the two App License Assignment types.

Device-Based Assignment

Volume Purchased apps can be distributed to devices without an Apple Account using device-based app assignments. This is the easiest method, without extra steps required by the user. Jamf Now uses device-based assignment for eligible devices by default.

  • No Apple Account required

  • Apps assigned directly to a device's serial number

  • App license required for each device

  • App does not appear in App Store purchase history

  • Apps not included in iCloud or iTunes backups

User/Apple Account-Based Assignment

This method assigns the app license to a user's Apple Account. A Volume Purchasing invite must be sent, and a user must accept with the Apple Account and password.

To switch to Apple Account-based assignment:

  1. Go to More Settings > Apps and choose Apple Account-based assignment.

  2. Ensure the box for Invite users to associate their Apple Account with volume purchasing at time of enrollment is checked.

  3. Click Save Settings.

  • Apple Account must be associated with Volume Purchasing (sent automatically by Jamf Now to iOS 8 or earlier and macOS 10.10 and earlier)

  • License is assigned to Apple Account

  • License can be used across devices by the Apple Account

  • App appears in App Store purchase history
