Why aren't apps from Jamf School installing on mobile devices automatically?

Updated over 2 months ago

Description

This article offers guidance for troubleshooting volume purchasing app deployments. Use the steps below to determine why Volume Purchasing apps from Jamf School are not installing automatically.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Is the Push Certificate still valid?

    1. Check in Jamf School under Organization > Settings > Apple Push Notification Service.

  2. Is the Volume Purchasing token still valid?

    1. Check in Jamf School under Organization > Settings > Content (Volume Purchasing).

  3. Are devices are supervised?

    1. Non-supervised devices will receive the prompt below for the user to allow installation.

    2. Device supervision status shows in the upper-left corner of the Device Details page in the inventory record. If the device is supervised there will be a box noting this whereas unsupervised devices will display nothing.

      vs

    3. To supervise the device, please see Supervision with Jamf School.

  4. Does the Activity Log show a NotNow response?

    1. The device needs to be in a state where it can process the command. If it cannot, it may return the status of NotNow.

    2. Please see Explaining NotNow response for MDM commands in Jamf School for more information and resolution steps.

  5. Are Volume Purchasing licenses available?

    1. For an app to install on a device without an Apple Account signed in, it needs to be assigned a Volume Purchasing license.

    2. Some reasons there may be no license include:

      1. All of licenses from Apple School Manager are in use.

      2. There are no licenses because the app record was created manually in Jamf School. The app will show as an 'Apple App Store' app and licenses remaining column is 'n/a.'

      3. The 'Automatically distribute licenses to users in scope' option is unchecked under Advanced Options in the upper-right corner of the app record.

  6. What installation type is selected?

    1. The installation methods for iOS apps in Jamf School are: Install Automatically and On-Demand.

    2. The installation type displays on the app inventory record under "This app will be distributed to the follow devices groups"

    3. To change the installation type, please see: Jamf School iOS application installation types.

  7. If apps are being deployed with User-based Volume Purchasing, has the VPP invitation been accepted?

    1. If assigning app licenses to Apple Accounts instead of devices, the users will need to have accepted a Volume Purchasing invitation. Users who have accepted the invitation will have the VPP status Associated.

    2. To check the VPP status of the user in Jamf School, go to Users > Users and reference the VPP Status column.

    3. Please see Deploying Volume Purchasing apps with Jamf School to users/Apple Accounts for the steps to deploy Volume Purchasing apps to a user's Apple Account (including the VPP invite).
