Tracking Policy Completion using Policy Logs in Jamf Pro

Description

With most items in Jamf Pro, a Smart Group or Advanced Search can be created to view the status of the items completion. Policies do not have a Smart Group criteria, but completion status can be tracked using one of the options below:

  1. Individual Policy Logs

  2. Policy Status Overview

  3. Jamf Pro Dashboard

This article provides more information on each of these methods. Keep in mind that policies with scripts that restart devices will not report completed.

Tracking Your Policy Competition Status

A. Viewing the Individual Policy Logs

This method provides the information below:

  • List of computers that have run the policy

  • Date/time the policy ran

  • Status of the execution

  • Detailed actions logged

Steps:

  1. In Jamf Pro navigate to Computers > Policies.

  2. Select the policy in question and click Logs in the bottom-right corner.

  3. This will bring up a list of devices with a pending, completed, failed status.

  4. To view the policy log for a specific computer, click Details.


B. Policy Status Overview

This method provides the completion information below:

  • Number of computers that completed the policy

  • Number of failed attempts

  • Number of remaining computers

Steps:

  1. In Jamf Pro navigate to Computers > Policies.

  2. Click Grid View, in the top-right corner next to New.

  3. This will display a graph with completion data for each policy configured, organized by assigned category.

C. Dashboard Monitoring

This option is beneficial for ongoing monitoring of specific policies, rather than viewing all policies. It shows completed, pending, retrying, and failed deployment attempts in real-time.

Steps:

  1. In Jamf Pro, go to Computers > Policies and select the policy in question.

  2. Check the Show in Jamf Pro Dashboard checkbox in the upper-right corner.

  3. To view the dashboard, click the Jamf Pro emblem in the upper-left corner.
