Lost Mode for iOS Devices in Jamf School

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Description

Lost Mode is an MDM command that allows a supervised mobile device to be locked down and its last coordinates are reported to Jamf School. The user can't unlock the device until Lost Mode is disabled and will be notified if anyone accessed the device's location information while it was locked.

Note- The device will need to be on and have a network connection in order for the MDM command to be successful.

Enabling Lost Mode on a Device Managed by Jamf School

  1. Navigate to Devices > Inventory.

  2. Open the inventory record of the device in question.

  3. Select Enable Lost Mode on the device's inventory record under Quick Actions.

The image shows a device record in Jamf School and highlights where the Enable Lost Mode button shows under Quick Actions.

  4. (optional) Fill out a Lock Message, Telephone Number, and Footnote.

This image shows the pop up with the optional fields when enabling lost mode.

  5. Click Enable Lost Mode.

Once the command is received, the device will enter Lost Mode and its GPS coordinates will be viewable in its inventory record. After the device is put into Lost Mode, we will now also have the option to use the Quick Action: "Play Sound". This will produce a ringing noise on the device so that we can locate the device if it is nearby.

Disabling Lost Mode on a Device Managed by Jamf School

  1. Navigate to Devices > Inventory.

  2. Open the inventory record of the device in question.

  3. Select Disable Lost Mode on the device's inventory record under Quick Actions.

Important Note- the device will need a network connection to receive the Disable Lost Mode command. If the command does not complete, the device will need to be restored to factory defaults using Apple Configurator or in recovery mode.
