What is Lost Mode in Jamf Pro?

Description

Lost Mode is an MDM command that allows a supervised mobile device to be locked down and its last coordinates reported to Jamf Pro. The user can't unlock the device until Lost Mode is disabled and they will be notified if anyone accessed the device's location information while it was locked.

Note: The device will need to be on and have a network connection in order for the MDM command to be successful.

Enabling lost mode on a device managed by Jamf Pro

  1. In Jamf Pro, navigate to Devices > Search Inventory and click Search.

  2. Select the device in question to open the inventory record.

  3. Select the Management tab.

  4. Click Enable Lost Mode under Management Commands.

  5. Fill out the following in the pop up:

    • Choose from the available options in the dropdown menu under Displayed Information

    • Add a message and phone number to display on the Lock Screen for someone to reach out to you if they find the device.

    • Add a footnote if there is any other information you want to show on the Lock Screen.

    • Choose to enable Always enforce Lost Mode and Lost Mode Sound.

  6. Click Enable Lost Mode.

Finding Lost Mode Data in Jamf Pro

Once the command is received by the device, the device will enter Lost Mode. Once in Lost Mode, the device's inventory record under Inventory > Security will contain:

  • its last known GPS coordinates.

  • an option to click Play Sound which produces a ringing noise on the device to help locate it.

  • additional Lost Mode information in the Security section.


Disabling Lost Mode

  1. In Jamf Pro, navigate to Devices > Search Inventory and click Search.

  2. Select the device in question to open the inventory record.

  3. Select the Management tab.

  4. In Management Commands select Disable Lost Mode.

    • Important Note: The device will need a network connection to receive the Disable Lost Mode command. If the command does not complete, the device will need to be restored to factory defaults using Apple Configurator or in recovery mode.
