Using Jamf Sync to Migrate Packages Between Cloud Distribution Points

Instructions for moving from one Cloud Distribution Point type to another, or changing Jamf Pro hosting region while retaining JCDS files.

Updated today

Overview

Jamf Pro allows only one Cloud Distribution Point to be configured at any one time. This presents additional complexity for situations where a group of packages needs to be migrated from one Cloud Distribution Point to another, like moving from AWS S3 to JCDS, or if the Jamf Pro hosted region is changing and packages must be migrated across regions for the same Jamf Pro instance.

The recommended path for these situations is to use the Jamf Sync tool to replicate all files from the existing Cloud Distribution Point to a local folder, and then once all the environmental changes are complete, to use Jamf Sync to replicate those files from the local folder to the new Cloud Distribution Point location.

The Jamf Sync utility is available here.

Note: All screenshots are examples only, each environment will use it's own naming conventions.

Preparing for Migration

  1. After downloading and installing Jamf Sync, running it for the first time will present a license notification dialog. After you accept the agreement, you will be brought directly to the Setup view.

  2. Click the Add Jamf Pro Server button to add the Jamf Pro instance Jamf Sync will be communicating with:

Note: For additional details on using Username/Password credentials or Client API credentials, and the various Read/Update privileges required, please review the Jamf Sync User's Guide in the Help menu of Jamf Sync.

  3. Once the Jamf Pro connection is completed, click Add File Folder and choose a location on the computer running Jamf Sync that will be used to back up the contents of the Distribution Point.

  4. The next step is the Replication action itself. In Jamf Sync, "Source" is always on the left, and "Destination" is always on the right, so select the appropriate locations from each drop down menu and click Synchronize.

    • To replicate from a Cloud Distribution Point to a local folder, choose the Cloud Distribution Point as "Source" and the local folder as "Destination", and then click the Synchronize button.

  5. Once this replication is complete, a local copy of all files from the Distribution Point will now exist in the local folder, and the migration process can begin.

Note: For additional details on the various icons and their meaning are in Jamf Sync, please review the Jamf Sync User's Guide in the Help menu of Jamf Sync.

Completing Migration

Follow the steps below depending on your reason for migration: moving from one Cloud Distribution point to another or changing hosting region.

For Jamf Pro instances moving from AWS S3 to JCDS

  1. Log in to Jamf Pro and navigate to Settings > Server > Cloud Distribution Point.

  2. Click Edit and in the Content delivery network drop down menu, change from Amazon Web Services to Jamf Cloud.

  3. Click Save.

  4. Next, open Jamf Sync and set the local folder as "Source" and the Jamf Pro Distribution Point as "Destination", then click Synchronize.

  5. Once this is complete, verify existing policies in Jamf Pro that install packages complete successfully.

For Jamf Pro instances changing hosting region

Once confirmation is received from Jamf that the instance has completed the region migration:

  1. Open Jamf Sync and set the local folder as "Source" and the Jamf Pro Distribution Point as "Destination."

  2. Click Synchronize.

  3. Once this is complete, verify existing policies in Jamf Pro that install packages complete successfully.
