Password for WiFi on device is viewable for devices managed by Jamf School

Updated over 3 months ago

Issue Description

When a user is accessing a device they can view the WiFi password by navigating to Settings > Wi-Fi > [Selecting blue i for the connected Wifi] and we want the password not to show.

When connecting manually to WiFi the password is viewable even if the same network is later deployed via MDM.

Troubleshooting Steps

Deploy a WiFi profile with the same SSID and a second WiFi Profile with a fall back SSID following the steps below.

Please Note: It is highly recommended to test this workflow on a test device as oppose to your fleet of devices since issues with network deployment can cause the need to manually reconnect devices.

  1. Ensure the device has a WiFi profile scoped to the device with the same SSID.

  2. Deploy a second guest network to the test device- Create a new profile via Profiles > Overview > Create Profile > Network Configuration Profile.

  3. After the test device successfully has the guest network installed, then enter the wrong password to the primary WiFi profile from step 1. This will kick the device to the guest network configured in step 2.

  4. After the test device has been kicked to the guest network, enter the correct password into the original WiFi profile.

  5. (Optionally) Redo steps 3-4 with the guest WiFi profile to force the device back to the primary SSID.
