Managing Shared iPads with Jamf School

Description

Shared iPads allow you to deliver personalized experiences on an iPad shared by multiple users. They are particularly beneficial in educational and organizational environments, enabling multiple users to share a single device while maintaining individual settings and data.

  • Apps and documents can be assigned either directly on the app/document record itself from Apps > Inventory or from within the class the shared iPad is a part of.

  • Home screen layout and Restrictions profiles must be created and assigned from the Class record.

Add Shared iPads to a Class

  1. In Jamf School, click Classes and either open an existing class or create a new class by clicking Add Class.

  2. Click Add Shared iPads to add a shared iPad:

This photo shows where you are able to find the Add Shared iPads button in a test class in Jamf School.
  3. In the Scope section, use the filters to pull in the devices that should be in this class. Please note that you'll have to filter on a specific device group if you don't want every shared iPad in this group. Click Save Scope.

This photo shows an example of where to apply specific filters to your device group.

Home Screen Layout for Shared iPads

Select Apps from the left menu and then drag the App Icon to the desired order on the screen image. Click Save in the bottom right when complete.

The image shows the view of the Apps page on a Jamf School class with shared iPad option added.

Note - this will install the apps on the device. You are also able to scope app licenses to apps from the app record under Apps > Inventory just like non-shared devices.

Idle Screen Lock Timeout

The idle screen lock timeout on Shared iPads is fixed at approximately 2 minutes and cannot be adjusted via MDMs, including Jamf. This is an Apple-defined setting.

Restrictions for Shared iPads

Click Restrictions and select/deselect the desired options to set up Restrictions for the shared iPads in that class. Click Save in the bottom right corner when complete.

The image shows the device functionality and applications restrictions settings available for shared ipads.

Enabling Temporary Sessions

To enable the temporary session (guest) option on Shared iPads:

  • Assign the iPads to at least one class where the temporary session option is set to 'Allow.'

  • In Jamf School, go to the class details and enable the temporary session option.

Troubleshooting Shared iPads

Re-enrollment Issues

If a recovered iPad does not re-enroll with the Shared iPad profile:

  • Assign the device to the correct Automated Device Enrollment profile in Jamf.

  • Run the setup assistant on the iPad again to trigger enrollment.
