Configuring Parental Controls for iOS or macOS in Jamf Pro

Configuring Parental Controls for iOS or macOS

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Description

Deploying Parental Controls for macOS or iOS is a fairly straight forward task, but the process and the functionality for iOS and macOS is not exactly the same. The following instructions should help give a clearer picture on how to configure the configuration profiles for each platform.

Deploying Parental Controls on Your Devices

For macOS:

  1. In Jamf Pro go to Computers > Configuration Profiles and click New.

  2. Name the profile; assign a Category and Site if needed.

  3. Select the Parental Controls payload of the profile.

  4. (Optional) Under the Content filtering tab select the options that need to be configured.

  5. (Optional) Select the Time Limits tab.

    1. Within this section of the profile, options can be configured to deny use of a computer scoped to the profile during the time limits set. The left section of the Time limits tab allows setting time limits in 30-minute increments.

    2. The Time limits tab on the right specifies when a computer can be used during a time of day.

For iOS:

  1. In Jamf Pro, navigate to Devices > Configuration Profiles > New.

  2. Name the profile; assign a category and site if needed.

  3. Select the Content Filter payload of the profile.

  4. Enter a Filter Name.

  5. Under Filter Type, there are a few built-in options that can be selected. There is also a plug-in option for organizations that have their own 3rd party Content Filter.

    • Depending on the option chosen for Filter type, there are options under Permitted URLs and Blocklisted URLs that can be configured. In the below example YouTube is Blocklisted.
