How to Restrict macOS to Single App Mode Functionality in Jamf School

Updated over a month ago

Description

Unlike iOS/iPadOS, macOS does not natively support Single App Mode. However, similar functionality can be emulated by configuring restrictions to allow only specific applications to run. This guide explains how to use the Safelist and Blocklist payload in Jamf School to achieve this effect.

Note: Users will not be able to access any apps outside of the Safelist, but the system will not automatically launch the app or lock the user into it.

Configuring Safelist and Blocklist

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Profiles > Overview > + Create Profile or edit an existing macOS profile.

  2. Select the Safelist and Blocklist payload in the profile. Click Configure if needed.

  3. Define Allowed Applications:

    • Add the specific app(s) you want to allow under the Paths to allowed applications section.

    • Leave all other apps restricted to emulate Single App Mode functionality.

  4. Click Save.

  5. Click Scope and assign the profile to the desired devices or groups. Click Save.

  6. Verify on a computer in scope that only the specified app(s) can launch.
