Devices Failing to Check in to Jamf School

Updated over 2 months ago

Issue Description

When a device doesn't check in to Jamf School for a period of time, the device will be marked as inactive. This is just a label; once a device checks in the inactive status will be removed.

The time it takes till devices are marked as inactive is configurable in Jamf School under: Organization > Settings > General > Device Management. Currently 8 weeks is the longest period that can be selected.

Troubleshooting Steps

If a device is not checking in with Jamf School we can try the steps below:

  • Ensure the device is on and has a network connection.

  • Ensure the network configuration is not blocking MDM communication: Firewall, Ports, IP Addresses and URLs Used by Jamf School and Use Apple products on enterprise networks.

  • For iOS devices: Switch Airplane Mode On and Off.

  • If the device still does not check in, it is possible the KeyChain has become locked causing the Wi-Fi password not to be transmitted to the Wi-Fi network. To unlock:

    1. Enter the device passcode.

    2. Switch the Airplane Mode On and Off on the device.

    3. Verify network connection on the device.

    4. Open the device record in Jamf School and click Refresh.
