How to Reset Passwords with the FileVault Recovery Key in Jamf Pro

This article will explain how to use the File Vault Personal Recovery Key for password resets on macOS.

Obtaining your FileVault Recovery Key and Reseting Passwords

To Obtain the File Vault Recovery Key

  1. Navigate to Jamf Pro > Computers > Search Inventory > Select desired Computer > Disk Encryption > next to "Personal Recovery Key" click Show Key.

  2. Ensure that the "Personal Recovery Key Validation" states Valid.

To Reset the Password on macOS

(Apple Silicon M2 computer)

  1. After entering a wrong Password, there should be a prompt to "Restart and show password reset options" > Click the arrow to restart.

  2. Once restarted, there should be a prompt to enter the Recovery Key.

  3. Enter the File Vault Personal Recovery Key from Jamf Pro. No need to worry about capitalization or dashes. macOS will handle both automatically.

  4. Once the File Vault Personal Recovery Key has been entered, select the Secure Token holder/User for the Password Reset.

  5. Enter the new Password into the various fields.

  6. Password reset is complete. Restart will be required.

Note: If Jamf Connect Login is enabled, utilize the following Terminal command to disable the Jamf Connect Login window to then perform the above workflow:

sudo authchanger -reset
