Why aren't apps from Jamf School appearing on managed iPhones and iPads?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Issue Description

Volume purchased (VPP) applications show as installed in Jamf School, but they do not appear on the device.

The following Jamf School profile settings can cause apps not to show on mobile devices:

  • Safelist and Blocklist

  • Layout

  • Restrictions > Media Content > Apps (Media Age Restrictions)

    • Will block any app rated at a higher level than what is set. If the age rating is set to allow apps rated at "12+" in the App Store, then all apps that are rated at a higher age will be blocked on the device.

Note - Jamf Teacher restrictions can also block apps from appearing on devices.

Troubleshooting Steps

Follow the steps below to identify which profile is causing the issue and update the profile so apps show as desired.

  1. Confirm what profiles are installed on the device:

    • In Jamf School go to Devices > Inventory and open the device record for a device missing the app.

    • Click Jamf School Teacher on the device record to see if Actions are active to rule out Jamf Teacher causing the issue.

    • Click Managed Profiles and make note of the profiles installed on the device.

  2. Open these profiles to see if the Safelist and Blocklist, Layout, or Restrictions payloads are configured.

  3. Make necessary changes to the profiles to allow desired to be displayed on devices.

    • For Safelist and Blocklist:

      • If Allow safelisted apps and categories is configured, add the app to the Safelisted Applications box.

      • If Restrict blocklisted apps and categories is configured, ensure the app is not in the Blocklisted Applications box and that the app doesn't fall into any of the blocklisted categories (see Determining App Categories for Safelist and Blocklist).

    • For Layout:

      • Add the app to the desired location on the layout profile.

    • For Media Age Restriction:

      • To find the age rating of the app, open the app in Apple School Manager and click View Details. In the tab that opens, scroll down to the Information section for the age rating.

Image of Apple School manager that shows where the View Details button is located for an app.

The image shows the information section of the App details and points out the Age rating.

      • For the example above, in Jamf School under Restrictions > Media Content > Apps, we would either need to select 4+ or Allow All Apps.

Image shows the Restrictions > media content profile options in Jamf School and shows where the option to set the matching age rating is.
