Description
When an iPad Passcode is forgotten, there is a Jamf School command (Clear Passcode) that can be used to clear the passcode of the iPad allowing the end user to get back in and set a new Passcode. However, if the device loses battery charge, or is power cycled, the device will lose Network Connection, preventing Jamf School from delivering this Clear Passcode command. This guide is designed to go over steps that can be taken to allow a device to tether an Internet Connection from a Mac to receive the Clear Passcode command from Jamf School, regardless of settings on the device that might otherwise prevent the iPad from connecting to computers.
Internet Tethering on Devices with Lost Network Connection
In Jamf School navigate to Organization > Settings > Supervision Identity
Download the supervision identity and select Show password > Copy this password for use later
Open Apple Configurator and navigate to Apple Configurator (top menu bar) > Settings > Organization
Select the More (...) option to the lower left of the configured organizations column and select Import Organization...
Search and select the Supervision Identity Certificate downloaded in step 2
Enter the Password copied in step 2 when prompted
Open Keychain access (Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access)
Select login > My Certificates: This should now show a Zuludesk: Jamf Software certificate that matches the Organization imported into Apple Configurator
Right click the Certificate > Get Info
Expand the Trust menu and in the "When using this certificate" drop-down select Always Trust
Connect the iPad to the computer and open System Settings > General > Sharing
Select the Info (i) option to the right of Internet Sharing
Select the checkbox for "iPad USB" > Done
Toggle Internet Sharing on
The iPad should now get an internet connection and start resolving any pending commands from Jamf School, including the Clear Passcode command (if previously sent to the iPad)
