Can't send text messages on phones managed by Jamf Now

Updated over a month ago

Issue Description

Devices are not sending or receiving iMessages in the Messages app but can still send and receive SMS text messages. This is due to the Disable Messages restriction in Jamf Now which prevents devices from using iMessage capabilities and limits the device to just SMS texting (green text bubbles).

Troubleshooting Steps

In order to have iMessages usable on the device, run through the steps below.

  1. Ensure the following settings are configured as desired on the blueprint assigned to the impacted device(s):

    • Restrictions > Apps > Disable Messages: this setting should be unchecked.

    • Restrictions > App Usage (if enabled)

      • Only allow some apps: Ensure Messages is included.

      • Hide some apps: Ensure Messages is not included.

    • Restrictions > Security and Privacy > Prevent Changes to Accounts: this settings will lock down ability to sign into iCloud accounts for the Messages app.

  2. After making changes to the blueprint, click Save.

  3. Once the device checks in and applies the blueprint update, the features should be available.
