Issue Description
Unable to pair iOS or iPadOS device with a computer. Receiving the error, "This iPad is supervised by another computer and cannot be used with this computer" when we connect the device by cable to a computer.
There are two common causes for this behavior:
Disable Connecting with Computers restriction is set in the device's blueprint in Jamf Now
Apple Configurator was used to supervise the device and had "Allow devices to pair other computers" unchecked
Troubleshooting Steps
Scenario A - Jamf Now restriction is blocking pairing
To remove the restriction on a few devices on the blueprint, temporarily swap blueprints* following the steps below:
In Jamf Now, go to Blueprints and open the blueprint to which the impacted devices are assigned.
Click the blueprint name at the top of the middle panel to open a drop down menu.
Click Copy. In the side pop-up menu set a blueprint name and click Save Blueprint in the lower-right corner.
Click Devices in the middle panel and assign the impacted devices to the copied blueprint.
Click Restrictions and under the Security & Privacy section, uncheck Disable Connecting with Computers.
Click Save Changes.
Once devices install the new blueprint, connect the device to a Mac and perform the desired action.
Re-assign devices back to their original blueprint(s).
*Note: If email accounts are deployed from Jamf Now, the end users will have to re-authenticate to their email accounts after the blueprint swap is complete.
To remove the restriction for all the devices on the blueprint, disable the restriction by following the steps below:
In Jamf Now, click Blueprints and select the blueprint that devices having this issue are assigned to.
Click Restrictions and under the Security & Privacy section, uncheck Disable Connecting with Computers.
Click Save Changes and sync device to apply new blueprint configuration.
Connect the devices to a Mac and perform the needed action.
If desired, re-enable Disable Connecting with Computers on the blueprint once it is no longer necessary to restrict.
Scenario B -The device was supervised using Apple Configurator and "Allow devices to pair other computers" was unchecked
The device should connect to the original Mac that prepared the device or other Macs that have had the supervision identity from Apple Configurator uploaded.
If not, the device will need to be reset in order to remove the pairing restriction from Apple Configurator.
Try to reset from the device itself using Erase All Content and Settings in the Settings App under General > Transfer or Reset.
If that is restricted, either:
remove the restriction from Jamf Now or use the workflow below
restore device:
