Description
Setting the wallpaper on Mac using Jamf Now requires macOS packaging to deploy the image file as well as custom profiles to instruct the Mac to set the image as the wallpaper.
Requirements:
Jamf Composer (to build the package that installs the necessary wallpaper image on the Mac).
Apple Developer Account (to sign the package which allows for Jamf Now deployment).
iMazing Profile Editor or some other tool that can be used to build the desktop picture custom profile.
Setting Up Custom Desktop Backgrounds
Create the background image package with Jamf Composer.
To build the package, start by saving the image to a folder location on your Mac. We recommend something easy like
/Users/Shared/Wallpaper
.You can then drag and drop the image from that folder location into a new Composer package which will result in Composer reflecting the same
/Users/Shared/Wallpaper
path with the image file accordingly.Follow the steps on Building and Signing Mac Packages to build and sign the package.
Upload the package to Jamf and deploy it to managed computers.
Log in to Jamf Now.
Click Apps.
Click Add an App.
Click Upload Your App.
Drag your custom .pkg file onto the upload page or click Browse to search for it on your computer.
Once the file successfully uploads, it will appear in your Apps page and is ready for deployment via blueprint.
Click Blueprints and select the desired blueprint.
Click Apps, click Add App, check the box of the installation methods desired for the newly added package.
Create a Desktop Picture Custom Profile to enforce the image as the desktop.
Follow the Jamf Now documentation to create a Desktop Picture custom profile in iMazing Profile Editor.Lock the desktop picture so it cannot be changed (if desired).
Enter the previously selected path used in the pkg created in step 1.
Upload and deploy the Custom Profile.
In Jamf Now click Blueprints and select the desired Blueprint.
Click Custom Profiles and click Add Custom Profile.
Drag and drop the file created in iMazing or click Browse to upload the file. Then click Add Profile.
Once the profile is installed, the background image should be applied on the Mac. If the wallpaper is not visible, check to ensure that the image was installed successfully. If not, test package redeployment via the Mac Apps tab of an individual Mac to retry installation.
Note: If the profile was installed before the image package, the wallpaper will be applied on the next macOS restart.
