"An Error Occurred. (Error code: 5)" When Accessing "About Chrome" in Jamf School

If deploying Google Chrome with App Installers in Jamf School, end users may encounter the "An error occurred. (Error code: 5)" message when attempting to update Google Chrome via the "About Chrome" section.

The error occurs because the built-in auto-update feature in Google Chrome is disabled when the app is deployed using App Installers. The disabling of auto-updates is intentional to avoid conflicts between in-app updates and the App Installers update mechanism.

Additionally, if the "Install supporting configuration profiles" option is checked during deployment, Chrome developer updates are disabled to prevent race conditions between in-app updates and App Installers applying updates.

Updating Chome

To update Google Chrome without encountering the error:

  1. Let users know not to rely on the "About Chrome" section for updates, as the built-in auto-update feature is disabled.

  2. Use App Installers to apply updates to Google Chrome. The App Installers mechanism ensures the app remains up-to-date while avoiding conflicts with in-app updates.
